Pope Leo XIV's trip to Bata, marked a pivotal moment in his Apostolic Journey throughout Africa. In spite of an unexpected rain shower, the ambiance stayed celebratory, filled with chants, songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and enthusiastic crowds welcoming the pontiff. The Pope conveyed a message of hope and love, urging the youth to allow Christ's light to guide them towards a future characterized by responsibility and optimism.

In his homily, he underscored the significance of faith, unity, and compassion, encouraging the faithful to embody their beliefs through tangible actions and to strive for a society that promotes the common good. He further urged the leaders and citizens of Equatorial Guinea to place the common good at the forefront and collaborate to ensure that the nation's natural resources benefit everyone. The Mass served as a profound spiritual experience, attracting large crowds and emphasizing Pope Leo's mission to reach out and strengthen connections with Catholic communities throughout the region.

Knowledge and the search for truth cannot be separated from an adherence to reality, lest they degenerate into attempts to judge it according to one’s own convenience. The desire to know must instead be open to reality, and, from a Christian perspective, faith purifies the search by freeing it from a sense of self-sufficiency and leads it to places where reason also tends but cannot fully reach. So said Pope Leo, speaking at the inauguration of the campus of the National University of Equatorial Guinea, which bears his name. “May the new generations be formed in an integral way, beyond the mere appearance of success. The fruits will not be long in coming,” said the Pontiff, addressing the academic and cultural communities

Pope Leo XIV's visit to Equatorial Guinea marks the conclusion of his 10-day apostolic journey throughout Africa, which commenced on April 13, 2026, and included stops in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. This trip holds historical importance as it represents the first papal visit to the nation since Pope John Paul II's visit in 1982.

The second segment of Pope Leo's apostolic journey in Cameroon has concluded April 18. A farewell ceremony was held at Yaoundé airport following the Mass, which was attended by more than 200,000 faithful.

Pope Leo XIV lands in Cameroon

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Cameroon is the fourth apostolic visit by a pontiff, following those of John Paul II in 1985 and 1995, and of Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The last two papal visits were closely linked to the Synods on Africa, and the pontiffs were welcomed in the capital, Yaoundé, by a large gathering of African bishops.
